The Transportation Department consists of two divisions: (1) maintenance and (2) construction.

The Maintenance Division maintains and repairs over 65 miles of surface roadway, curb/gutter, handicap access ramps, traffic control devices and cross walks. The Maintenance Division is also responsible for street sweeping operations. Seasonal maintenance and repair of ditches and drainage facilities are included in the responsibilities of the Division, as well as tree trimming in alleys utilized by refuse vehicles.

The Construction Division is used to improve the streets, curb, gutter, and sidewalks of the community. In the past, the Maintenance Division both maintained transportation facilities and constructed new ones. This is no longer possible with the increasing amount of streets and sidewalks needing to be constructed and the high maintenance demands the aging streets of Beloit require. With the creation of the Construction Division, the City hopes to reduce the escalating costs associated with new construction by being responsible for the construction of the new streets with City crews. The Division also hopes to be more responsive to requests for new street construction by being able to begin construction more timely with City crews. The Construction Division will be solely dedicated to the construction of new streets or the replacement of existing streets needing to be totally reconstructed.
